I am writing this post in between studying because surprisingly, I do need a break from stretching the limits of my short-time memory from time to time, and also because I've been meaning to do another anime write up for a while now.

I'm taking a break from One Piece and Fairy Tail until they've finished their current arcs so I can watch them in one go, but as always, I follow a few shows as they air.

Considering that I only put out two podfics all year in 2012, I'm quite surprised (but also super pleased, obvs) by my podfic output so far this year. Coming right up: two more Hockey RPF podfics. Even better yet: two collaborations with the awesome [personal profile] fishpatrol!

Four Kisses by grim_lupine (Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews) is short and sweet and reverse chronological. I almost messed up one of the lines in this story because I was busy melting into a puddle of fuzzy feelings and 'Awwwww'-ing all over the place.

Making the cover was fun - I'm still a bit disappointed that no one could find us that mystical picture of the two dudes who look like Kaner and Tazer making out, tbh. Alas, instead I spent a few hours on google looking for kissing pictures (wondering about the lack of outright porn until I noticed google had turned the safe search filter on. Oh, google.) and eventually found this picture. At least that one dude kinda looks like Johnny? Anyway. It is becoming quite obvious that I'm way too fond of the Blackhawks colour scheme (and the stripes thing! <3), considering I've made 3 covers so far - all for hockey podfic, granted - and they're all red/white/black.

You can download (or stream!) here. (8:54 min)

(Cover made by [personal profile] fishpatrol <3)

Just Routine by grim_lupine (Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews). The author's summary is as follows: "Three times Johnny went to Patrick's room, and one time Patrick went to him."
How much do I love all the fic about the room sharing, or rather, lack of room sharing now that they get single rooms? SO. MUCH. The codependency of this pairing just really works for me, IDEK.

Download or stream over here. (13:05 min)

These were my first collaborations (unless you count theatripod, but well, that's not out yet) and it was a great experience! :D I want to do more!

cinéma vérité by ohtempora (Hockey RPF, Jonathan Toews/Patrick Kane) is a an awesome story. Seriously, I fell in love as soon as I read the summary:

"Movie nights with Kaner become a thing once they begin to get recognized enough that physically going to the movies means he spends a couple of days waiting for the Deadspin exposé entitled Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane Have Terrible Taste in Movies, Each Other to hit the internet."

See? Awesome! :D The whole story is just full of lines that were so. much. fun. to read out loud (Ryan Gosling and his abs! Microbreweries! Okay, that one was actually pretty difficult.), and I recorded them over and over again to find the most fun deliveries. I think I already thought about how one could audibly separate the movie sections when I read this fic for the very first time, so this is possibly the first thing I read from a podfic view point from the very start.

I decided on using film music right away, and then ran straight into the problem of only ever having seen one of the featured movies (LotR), so while I could obviously look stuff up on youtube, I didn't actually know if people who had seen these films would really associate the songs with them. Twitter came through for me for the most part, and I hope that you, dear listener, recognize them if you've seen the movies. Coincidentally, two of the songs are by Muse. Huh. For one section, I also used audio from the movie itself, because reasons.

(Side note: Since recording and editing etc. I have actually seen Up, which is an utterly amazing movie that made me CRY LIKE YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE. Like, I was just a sobbing mess when the movie ended, and it's not a sad ending! I literally said "I'm not crying because I'm sad, I just have too many feelings!" to my friend as the credits rolled. No one would ever bet on who could make me cry first. It'd just be a matter of who got to me faster.)

[livejournal.com profile] fishpatrol was my beta and also enlightened me re: hummus (I kept reading that everywhere but never bothered to look up just what it is). The cover was once again made by yours truly, though to be honest all I had to do was stumble over that picture, make it darker and choose a font. Fonts are serious business. (I know, I know, they're not actually in a movie theatre, but I really liked that picture, okay?)

Alright, the download link is here at mediafire and the length is exactly 15:30.

Finally, I'd like to say that I completely agree with the author's notes on the story: that gif of Jonathan Toews being freaked out by pigeons really is the most hilarious thing on the Internet.

the24thkey: (podfic <3)
I recorded two podfics for Hananobira's Audiofic Archivist Appreciation Meme, aka #3AM! \o/ I was a bit nervous because this was the first fest or challenge I signed up for and my previous podfics took foreeeeeeeeveeeeeeer to edit. But as it turns out, the deadline worked really well for me and my productivity.

FIRST UP:

 photo So-Totally-Busted-300px_zps300dce6f.jpg

So Totally Busted (Young Avengers, Billy Kaplan/Teddy Altman) by Perpetual Motion, who has blanket permission, yay!

This is a short one, so I'm just going to give you the summary and let you listen for yourself: "Yeah, Billy's a superhero, and that's awesome. But he's still a teenager, and that means answering to his folks."

This fic was requested by[profile] sly_hostetter, who obviously has very good taste in both fandoms and fics. I love the Young Avengers and especially Billy and Teddy. Though to be honest - all of the characters are awesome (Kaaaaate <3). The inclusion of everyone's parents in the earlier issues of the series was something I really enjoyed, particularly that one scene with Billy's parents. Possibly my favourite scene in the comics, ngl. :D

The awesome cover art was made by[personal profile] raz0rgirl and[personal profile] duckgirlie was my super speedy beta who conveniently knew things about Adium. I actually tried to find the message alert sound that Adium makes, but the one youtube video I found (yes, someone made a video solely to share that sound with the world) was sadly not of very good quality. Where does everyone else get their sound effects?

AND NOW:

 photo puppycover300_zps1efd70b4.jpg

Gone to the Dogs by Rei Kinneas. hockeyrpf, gen-ish (Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews pre-slash). Recorded for[personal profile] fish_echo.

Ah~, hockeyrpf. Still ruining my life in the most enjoyable way possible. This was one of the first hockey fics I read and it's super adorable. I mean, Jonathan Toews turns into a puppy! Need I say more? It's also the first gen fic I've recorded - for a given, very pre-slashy definition of gen. Things I enjoyed about this story: Kaner having a lot of feelings while also being very oblivious, puppy!Johnny being his cock-blocking and jealous self, Sharpy (because, c'mon, he's Sharpy! Do I need a reason?), Seabs and his book of Wicca spells, and the image of Coach Q consulting with puppy!Tazer during practice. D'awwww.

The song at the beginning/end is Gone to the Dogs by KT Tunstall, because I remain somewhat uncreative in that regard. I considered using this song from the start, then decided to search all of my music for a better fit, and in the end I returned to it after all. <.< Choosing music is hard, yo.

Thanks to the lovely[livejournal.com profile] fishpatrol for the beta and to[personal profile] sylvaine for helping me out with the surprise!Slovakian. Cover art is by me, surprisingly! My first go at it, yay!

(Also, is this a good week or what? 3AM podfics are posted, Fall Out Boy have new music AND Community comes back on in a few days! Awesome! :D)

SO. I was listening to the pod_aware podcast on accents and thought to myself: Wouldn't it be cool if all the podfic readers recorded themselves talking in their native language/languages they can speak aside from English? And by 'thought to myself' I mean 'posted on twitter', obviously. And then  [personal profile] sylvaine, who is an enabling enabler who enables, liked the idea and now we are making it a meme! Which means everyone should do it so we can listen to all the beautiful languages everyone speaks, even if we don't understand a word they say. Because fuck yeah, languages, that's why. <3

I don't have her dedication to actually search for fic in the languages I speak, so here's me, reading stuff from some books I had lying around:

The German excerpts are, in order, from Faust, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the civil code of Germany. Yeah. The French (I'M SO SORRY FOR THAT /o\) and Japanese excerpts are from some text books.

So this was fun! :D

If you record your own version, make sure to comment on sylvie's post with the link! That way, everyone can find everyone else's posts. <3
the24thkey: (podfic <3)
Second ever podfic, wohoo! And this time it took me only...5 months to edit, so I'm clearly getting better at editing, right? Right.

Phil Coulson, Office Heartthrob by [livejournal.com profile] noelia_g is one of my favourite stories in the Avengers fandom for many, many reasons. The list includes, but is not limited to, a hilarious Clint POV, Clint/Coulson, awesome OCs (Julia! The weapons people! Dr. Stark - no relation!), jealousy (which is a fic trope I like so much that I have a pinboard tag for it), feelings, obliviousness, coming-out scenes that are the opposite of embarrassing, hiding in air vents and baked goods.
I knew and adored [livejournal.com profile] noelia_g's writing from Generation Kill fandom and was super excited to see her writing in this fandom and for this pairing. <3

The recording process this time around was kinda frustrating at times - there were many lines where I found it very challenging to find the right delivery, and the raw recordings included (aside from me being distracted by the Olympics, oh self) many a rage noise as I tried again and again to finish a long sentence only to get hung up on the same words over and over again. I'm looking at you, 'new nurse'. So. Challenging, sometimes frustrating, but still a ton of fun.

[livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins, who I think we can all agree is the actual bestest, made the above cover (would you look at that perfection, oh my god) on ridiculously short notice. Thank you! <3

For now, here's the mediafire link. I'll add the archive link later.

I hope you enjoy! <3
the24thkey: (podfic <3)
Remember how I mentioned a few times that I was working on a podfic? Because OH MY GOD I ACTUALLY FINISHED IT. I started working on this half a year ago. Six. Months. Ago. Dear god. I'm so happy that I actually did it and I'm actually quite satisfied with how it turned out. So here it is, my first ever podfic:

Awesome cover is awesome and gorgeous and was made by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins. <3 The story is one of my all-time favourites from my years in bandom, Just Can't Get Enough by [livejournal.com profile] passe_simple. Featuring my favourite band (MCR), my favourite pairings (Frank/Gerard and a side of Bob/Brian), too many hilarious lines of dialouge to count and also a bunny. And it's a college AU. College AUs are always awesome. :D

The music I used is, obviously, Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode because I'm not very creative. I didn't know this song before I started looking for music to use as scene breaks (a bit before my time), but it reminds me of Westerland by Die Ärzte, so I like it. Also those trumpets in the instrumental part are awesome.

When I first decided that I was going to finally record a podfic, I wanted to look for a story that wasn't too long, and yeah, great planning skills self, this is an hour and 9 minutes long. *facepalm* I seriously underestimated the amount of time it would take me to record 9000 words (several times) and then edit it. Editing, you guys. Editing is hard. I now have even more respect for people who put out podfics that are several hours long.

My point is, it might have taken me forever, but I still loved working on this podfic because Just Can't Get Enough is an amazing and funny and extremely memorable story that I never get tired of. So much fun to read out loud and also weirdly fun to talk along to myself reading it while editing (and while listening to the final version on the train, which hopefully didn't make me look like too much of a crazy person).

My accent (and inability to pronounce some words) kind of annoyed me at times, but people like accents, right? Also I noticed the way I tend to EMPHASIZE every SECOND or sometimes THIRD word. Huh.

Anyway, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] passe_simple for writing this story and allowing me to record it and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkinsfor the above cover (ugh, would you look at Frank's mouth? Gorgeous.), for encouraging me to start doing this in the first place and for offering to listen to it before I unleashed it onto the Internet at large. (She also told me how the rest of the world pronounces Brian's last name. It sounds so weird that way, you guys. So weird.)

Here's the download link, I hope you enjoy. <3
the24thkey: (Dino-sigh)
So on this fine morning, while I was contemplating why Valentines Day* is called a holiday when we don't even get the day off, and whining about how my grades weren't quite as good as I wanted them to be, my parents were BATTLING FORCES OF NATURE! By which I mean our basement was flooded over night because our neighbours' water line broke (which was totally their fault, yo). AGAIN. Neighbours ruin everything, even when they're barely in the bloody house more often than once or twice a year. *sigh*

By the time I get home on Friday, the electricity and heating will be sorted out, but because the water was about 40 cm high, a lot of appliances (expensive ones, but insurance will take care of that, thank god), food and other things are probably ruined, not to mention that the last time this happened, drying everything out took about three months. /o\

Not cool.

Anyway, back to the fun stuff. Like Phil Coulson/Clint Barton, which is a pairing for which there should be more fic. <3 Reading the ones that are out there has gotten me even more excited for The Avengers! Sadly, I have no fangirls to go watch it with, though, which is going to make the whole experience a bit less fun (but not too much). American superhero comics are just not a very big deal over here, so the people I'm most likely going to drag to the cinema with me, my sister and her bf, have no idea who these people who I'm going to squee over are. <.<

Another fandom I'm currently obsessing about is Hockey RPF, because fandom is apparently kind of a hive mind. Thankfully, you don't need to know anything about Hockey itself to read about emotionally stunted boys in love, otherwise I'd be completely lost. Hockey is not all that popular here either, seeing as we're a football country all the way - but apparently my home city's team is one of the better ones nationally? Who cares, all I know about hockey I know from a children's cartoon about ANTHROPOMORPHIC, HOCKEY-PLAYING, CRIME FIGHTING DUCKS FROM OUTER SPACE.

Ah, Mighty Ducks - better than it sounds. I only just remembered that I used to watch this as a kid. The show is really old, so I couldn't find a lot of pictures to show you, but here you go:

Reference pics and the intro behind the cut )

As you might have guessed, those are not their real names, aside from Mallory, Tina and Duke L'Orange. Yeah, that's just how awesome this show is, they named one of their characters DUKE L'ORANGE.

The lot of them come from a planet of ice hockey playing ducks (lol) that was invaded by...an evil dinosaur over lord. In order to fight him, they flee to earth (logic? IDK) and become ice hockey superstars by day, vigilantes by night. It's hilarious, trust me.

Mallory is my favourite - she's a weapons and fighting expert, how awesome is that? And the other girl on the team is a genius tech expert. When I think about it, those were really cool female role models!

Duke L'Orange (that name will never stop being funny) used to be a gentleman thief before joining the, uh, 'resistance', for lack of a better term. And the other three guys...honestly, I don't remember anything about them. *shrug* It was a really cool show, though, and it's still quite funny.

I found some episodes on youtube the other day, dubbed in German for extra nostalgia. I swear though, there is this one voice actor who also was the voice of a billion characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, who must be super rich, because I've heard his voice in every show ever. <.< He's the German voice of House, too.

Ah well, after this nice trip down nostalgia lane, I'm gonna go watch Chihayafuru - maybe the gods of Anime will grant me some Chihaya/Taichi development today?

(Probably not. But a girl can dream. <3)

*Also, is it Valentines Day or Valentine's Day?

the24thkey: (Default)
Alright, I hope everyone had awesome holidays! I did, for the most part, and now I'm just relishing in my free time and reading ALL THE FIC (and watching The Killing with my parents, but that is a topic for another post).

Now, I may not actively participate, but I love Yuletide. <3 I enjoy a lot of small fandoms, and Yuletide used to be the first place I looked for fic for them. Nowadays, the Archive makes it pretty easy to find stories in every fandom imaginable, but Yuletide is still awesome, obviously.

I still have a lot of open tabs and stories to read, but these are my favourites so far:

Lift Your Head And Look Out The Window Sarah Rees Brennan's Demon's Lexicon This is such a lovely story! I nearly forgot to look for this fandom, which would've been a shame. I love this trilogy, and most of all I love Jamie - especially his bff-ness with Nick and, of course, his relationship with Seb. And while this story is more about him and Mae (Which is also really cool. Siblings that get along really well FTW!), it still has these elements, which makes me very happy.

Basically, it's a post-canon story about Jamie moving on and, well, literally moving. It's really funny and sweet and Mae just cares a lot about her brother. <3 I love these little, subtle things that the author* throws in that tell us so much about the characters and how the events of the books have changed them (or rather, how they are still changing), like that line about how Mae talks about nothing but the market. Also, Seb and Nick just glaring at each other will never stop being funny. Never.

It feels like the prologue of a whole new story that I'd really like to read. <3

En Flambé My Drunk Kitchen A STORY. ABOUT MY DRUNK KITCHEN. WITH PICTURES. RUN DON'T WALK! Seriously, this is so much fun and reads just like a script. Anyone who enjoys MDK (AND WHY WOULDN'T YOU?) should read this.

Grab a blanket, brother Young Avengers The thing is, I really don't care much for Tommy. Maybe it's because he joined the team pretty late or maybe I just don't like his attitude, who knows. But this story? This story made me like Tommy. It made me care for a character I have little interest in. And if that isn't an amazing feat, I don't know what it is. A great character study.

A Traditional Family Roadtrip Tiger&Bunny So, Tiger&Bunny. I stopped watching it somewhere in the middle, because I really disliked the time skip and then it got kind of boring. However, as it turns out this Anime manages to become awesome again for the last few episodes. However, my viewing habits don't have anything to do with this story, so I'll stop right there.^^''

Anyway, this fic is set post-canon and is pure feel-good fluffy pre-slash of the 'Someone else knows they're in love and is exasperated at their ridiculousness' flavour. Basically, Kaede goes on a roadtrip with her Dad and Barnaby. I love her POV and how she just can't help but come to the realization that Barnaby, whom she used to idolize to the max, is really just kind of a dork. A dork who might just become her step-father. <3

Nostalgia Chick Must Die! Nostalgia Chick and other assorted That Guy With The Glasses people Confession time: Real Life Lindsey and Todd have kinda become my ideal of a relationship since I found out they were together, never mind how little I know about them. <3 This story isn't about them, however, it's about their characters (and not really about Todd, anyway). What it is is Crack. Crack of the highest and most delicious and piiiiiiiiiiink caliber. It has clones and SCIENCE and MacGuffins and quasi-demonic forces of evil, like any good Team nChick story line should have. Love it. :D

Batignolles Paris je t'aime (Le Marais) I was so excited when I saw this! A story about my favourite short film from the anthology about Paris, which we watched in French Class. It starts where the short film ends and is just a lovely continueation. Just what I wanted.

Real Revennnnnnge An incredible story about Nolan and Tyler and how they work. The actual show just makes me want delicious, delicious hatesex between these two characters, but this makes me see them in a whole other, dare I say 'relationshipy', way. Brilliant.

Camera, Camera Tanya Huff's Smoke series Thank the Yuletide gods for bringing us Lee/Tony stories every christmas. Can this be a bigger fandom already? Please?
Anyway, a story about coming out, things not going as planned and Lee and Tony being trouble-magnets in love. As it should be. <3

And while I'm at it, here are two Harry/Draco Fics from that one holiday exchange, because they are both intensely gripping and long and gorgeous and so worth every hour of missed sleep:At your Service and The Boy Who Only Lived Twice. Anyone got anymore recs from that exchange?

Right, that's it for now, maybe I'll do another rec post soon-ish, maybe not. The new season of Sherlock will probably distract me anyway (OMG SO EXCITED!!!! :D)

*So busted. :D I should have known from the moment I saw the title, really.
the24thkey: (Nobuta - kokoro)
- So~ I got a job. With the department of finances or the tax office or however you call it. I didn't see that coming, to be honest, but it's a pretty good job - I'll get a Bachelor of Law degree at the same time, because we have this dual system here in Germany where you spend a few months at university, then a few months at work, then again at university etc. But dude, they make you sign a shitload of papers before you become a public employee...

Also! Only one more month of school! Awesome! Also also: Flirting is hard when you've never been in a relationship before. *sigh*

- I went to my first LAN Party last week! All we did was play Ragnarok, but it was pretty cool. :D I'm also planning some old-school Anime marathons with the same group of people - Digimon, Dragonball and One Piece from the very beginning. <3

- THE MIDDLEMAN! That show is awesome! I haven't seen all of the episodes yet, but I'm already sad about how few of them there are. It's just such a fun show! Noser is adorable and I want to be Dub-Dub when I grow up. <3

Seriously, at least check out some clips on youtube if you've never heard of it!

- I'm also watching Sekaiichi hatsukoi at the moment, which is an awesome yaoi Anime - not that it hasn't the usual problems of the genre, but it's about publishing Manga! And teenagers in love! Well, only in the past, but whatever. It's pretty cute, and I like the animation.
the24thkey: (merlin - r u for cereal)
First of all: I can feel weather changes in my jaw, where the metal plates are. That's just...strange.

Secondly: Yesterday, I went to see 'Entre les murs', a French film which won a golden thingie at Cannnes, with part of my French class at this French-German mini-film festival we have here in Karlsruhe. My classmates pretty much thought it sucked, while I (and my teacher) thought that it was a very interesting and emotionally challenging film.  More about it under the cut. )
I'd recommend it, as long as you don't just want some light entertainment. Speaking of which, I could really go for some Live Free or Die Hard right now...

Finally, football:

- Match 1: Germany vs. Serbia. I only saw the last 20 minutes of this game because I had an appointment for a quick check-up at the hospital in Heidelberg (When we arranged it, we didn't know Germany was playing.). Amusingly, they called yesterday to ask if we couldn't come earlier, which wasn't possible, and when we got there, we only spent about 5 minutes in the hospital - normally we wait at least half an hour, but today there were literally only two other people waiting and we went right through. The doctor, who probably was in the entrance hall watching the game before we arrived (they had a screen up there), was called and when he arrived we spent maybe three minutes talking before we arranged the next appointment and went back out. We didn't even have to pay for the parking, that's how fast we were.
Anyway, when me and my Dad where back home, we caught the rest of the match but...well. What a disappointment. There were some decisions by the referee that I wasn't very happy with, especially near the end, but I don't really blame him for the outcome. *sigh*

- Match 2: USA vs. Slovenia. There are three reasons why I like the US national team. They are very nonsensical and shallow reasons.
1. I like that guy with the beard. I don't know why. I just like him.
2. That Donovan dude looks like a friend of mine. Said friend's father is from the US. This amuses me way too much.
3. Their jerseys are cool.
Aside from that, I actually thought they deserved to win and I don't understand why that goal didn't count. I don't think anybody but the referee understands that.

England is playing in 15 minutes - Let's see how that goes.

P.S.: An observation: I haven't heard that German football song by Sportfreunde Stiller once this year. What the hell? I really liked that one...
